Dextrose

One of the key software components in educational technologies projects is a stable operating system. Additionally it has to be flexible enough to be adapted according to changing needs by users and projects. Dextrose is a Sugar distribution which Activity Central co-develops to address these challenging requirements.

The core focus of Dextrose is reliability and usability in classroom settings. To ensure these characteristics Activity Central is working with ParaguayEduca, Plan Ceibal, OLPC, OLPC Australia, Sugar Labs, and others in the developer community. All of these contributors bring expertise and insights to the table which allows Dextrose to become a common software foundation for their projects.

The development process ensures that software features and fixes which are needed in schools can be quickly integrated. As these are often similar across very different projects this leads to a continued improvement of Dextrose. The experience gained in this iterative process also empowers participants to further adapt the software to their specific needs even when they don’t align with other efforts.

Some of the many improvements which have resulted from this approach and are now part of Dextrose are:

  • Versatile backup and restore system for use with servers or removable media devices.
  • A virtual keyboard and various display and mouse configuration options to make Sugar more accessible for users with special needs.
  • Enhanced support for accessing and sharing the Internet via GSM or 3G modems often used in rural environments.
  • Support for automatic reporting of software crashes as well as providing manual feedback.
  • Easy monitoring of system resources.

Activity Central also offers support services in combination with Dextrose and can serve as your one-stop shop for all questions and issues related to your project’s system.
